Volunteer Opportunities

Get to Know Your Church!

Getting involved in the inner workings of the church is one of the very best ways to get to know other people in the church well, to get to know how the church operates, and to feel a stronger connection to this community.

Choose What You Want to Do!

First Universalist is very active, so opportunities abound—from very short-term, task-oriented, low-commitment involvement (like joining a group in the kitchen for one evening to make crab cakes for the Clam Festival), to longer-term, high-commitment involvement (like joining a committee or the board of trustees), and all kinds of stuff in-between (like weeding the peace garden for a few months).

Have Lots of Fun!

No matter what level you participate on, you’ll meet wonderful people, get to know them well, and feel good about working together to make this church the great place that it is.

Volunteers Needed:

Below are some ideas for how to get involved. If they don’t appeal to you, design your own involvement! Contact the chair of any committee that interests you—they will be delighted to hear from you!

Shovelers Needed!

Please help keep our pathways clear and safe! Let us know which week(s) you (and your family and friends!) can be available to shovel, if necessary, during the months of November through April.

Sign up by email, or put your name on the sign-up sheet in the vestry.

Looking for Easy, Fun Ways to Get Involved?

Help Make Sunday Worship Happen!

At a casual glance, worship may seem like a performance—starting at 10:30 and ending at 11:30—staged by our minister, worship weavers, and choir. Look a little closer, though, and you see that we all share in creating worship; from the moment that we begin to congregate to the moment we wave “so long” for the week.

Sermon and song are only part of the worship service—the other parts are greeting each other with human warmth and connection, placing lovely items on the altar, and preparing coffee to sip while sharing hospitable fellowship.

Sign up for one Sunday or as many as you want!

Bean Suppers:

The church’s bean supper is a monthly fundraising event (the THIRD SATURDAY of each month) that’s a great volunteer opportunity if you want to help on a quick, short-term basis. It’s also a great social volunteer opportunity for families and youth groups.

Each month, we need folks to make Jell-O salads on the Friday before the bean supper. Now, if Jell-O isn’t fun – what is?!?

Also, we need kitchen-prep help starting at 2:00 on the afternoon of each bean supper – and, of course, clean-up after the dinner.

Help out, and you get your bean supper free!

To sign up, contact bean supper matriarchs Dorothy McAloney or Jane Cleaves, or email the church office.

First Saturday TLC:

At 9:00 a.m. on the FIRST SATURDAY of each month, we get together to clean, fix, tidy, spruce, weed, wash, or in some way take care of our church. Please join in. Just an hour or two of your time is all it takes to keep the place from going to wrack and ruin!

If you can be on the job this Saturday, please let Sarah Marshall know, or email the church office. Many thanks.

Recycling:

Our church community is committed to recycling the plastics, aluminum cans, paper, paperboard, and cardboard that we consume. This is not part of the Sexton's duties, however, so it's up to us, as volunteers, to get these materials to a recycling center each week.

If you would like to sign up for a month of recycling, please email the church office. Many thanks.

Religious Exploration Class:

Volunteer as a teacher, youth group leader or assistant. Our RE program depends on many volunteers to make it work, so we ask each family with a child registered in RE to assist with the program during the year. (Those without children in RE are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer as well!) Email the DRE to find out how you can help.

Caring Connection:

The church's grassroots organization that helps members and friends in times of need...needs your help!

We need more volunteers in all caring categories (see the Caring Connection Committee page for a category descriptions.

We also need list coordinators who would be contacted by the Caring Connection Coordinators to call volunteers to help out when needed.

If you would like to volunteer in either of these ways, please email the church office. Many thanks.
