Spectators watch a crane lift the spire from the belfry of the First Universalist Church on Main Street in Yarmouth on Aug. 30, and take pictures as the steeple is removed. Lisa Perkins, chairwoman of the church’s Steeple Preservation Committee, said the turnout was a tribute to the status of the church as a historical landmark in Yarmouth. The steeple was deemed unsafe by engineers, and a fundraising drive is underway to pay for repairs.
