Spirituality Groups

Taking seriously the UUA’s Statement of Principles and Purposes that says one of the reasons we gather is to “accept one another and encourage spiritual growth in our congregations,” First Universalist has a number of groups for just such a purpose.

Dance of the Spirit
Contact: Susan Hazzard

This women’s spirituality group meets monthly to discuss and celebrate women’s spirituality—past, present and future—through ritual and fellowship. This closed group invites visitors to attend a meeting on occasion. When the interest in the group gets large enough, Dance of the Spirit may help to “birth” a new, related group.

Thursday Morning Meditation
Contact: Erik Wikstrom
or SueEllen Bordwell

Each Thursday morning a group meets in the Sanctuary for a silent, seated meditation. Currently the group is meeting at 7:00 am, but it occasionally experiments with different times, depending on the season and the attendees. Please contact Erik or SueEllen or call the church office (846-4148) to confirm the meeting time.

UU Men’s Group
Contact: Bill Rixon

We have two men's groups, the White Stones and the Green Stones. Each group meets twice a month, either on the 1st and 3rd Monday or the 2nd and 4th Monday. We meet to wrestle with what it means to be a man in the 21st century. We value our brothers’ support in being the best partner, father, son, person we can possibly be. A high priority is to ensure that this circle is a place and time for each man to be heard, to be trusted, and to speak his emotional voice. We challenge each other to live with integrity, vigor, and commitment to the promises we make.

Many of the men came to the groups because they wanted more meaningful relationships with other men. In the process of committing ourselves to each other, we discover the next steps on our spiritual journeys and a deeper relationship with this church.

This is a closed group, which opens periodically to new members.

Here are a few thoughts that members of the groups have shared:

“In one word, I can say the thing I like best about the men's group is ‘FRIENDSHIP.’ It is a great opportunity to meet new people and get closer to those you already know.”

“For me, the Men's Group has provided a vehicle to get to know men in our community on a much deeper level. I have forged wonderful relationships as a result!”

“The best thing about our group (outside of fellowship of course) is that it cements a basic bonding with the church (along with Small Group Ministry) that I had not felt as strongly before….”
