How to Usher
1. Sign Up!
- Invite friends or family members to usher with you.
- Pick a Sunday that you’d like to usher.
- Sign up by email, or put your name(s) on the sign-up sheet on the vestry bulletin board nearest the kitchen.
2. Arrive at about 10:00 on the morning that you are to usher.
- Find and put on your name tag.
- Get comfortably present.
- Find copies of the Order of Service on one of the chairs by the door.
- Make sure enough name tags are out on the table at the back of the sanctuary
3. Before the Service
- Stand at the rear of the sanctuary.
- Welcome people as they come in look out for people you don't recognize, and make their greeting extra warm (it may be a newcomer's first impression of our community).
- Give everyone an Order of Service.
- Remind people to wear their name tags, and suggest to newcomers that they can make a name tag, if they wish, on the table inside.
- Discourage people from using the balcony (the rail height is not in compliance with state codes), unless the sanctuary is very full.
4. During the Service
A) Ring the Bell:
- After the Words of Welcome, listen for words to the effect of"Let our bell be rung and our service begun!"
- The bell rope is to the left of the front doors of the church it takes a few pulls to get the bell to ring.
- Ring the bell for as long as it feels right to you.
B) Help latecomers find a seat Encourage latecomers to wait until appropriate moments during the service to come in and find a seat, so that the noise of the entrance won't disrupt the service
C) Pass the collection plates
- About midway through the service, someone leading the service will ask you to come forward to get the plates for the collection.
- Go down each aisle, and pass the plate down each row of pews.
- Put the full plates in the cabinet to the left of the doors (under the painting); the Collector will pick them up after the service.
5. After the Service
- Pick up Orders of Service that have been left behind in the pews.
- Straighten the hymnals in the pews.
- Make sure the sanctuary is left neat.
Thank you for thinking about volunteering as an usher. You can do it for one or as many Sundays as you like.
