Annual Report 2005–2006

Report from the
Buildings and Grounds Committee

The B&G committee was again this year an informal assemblage of on-call persons.  This worked well for the most part, thanks to Debbie Woodbury in the church office, and Ted Moon as the church sexton, whose common sense and resourcefulness solved many a problem. Others who worked on projects included: Pete Titcomb, Ken Nye, Ralph Manglass, and Sarah Marshall. Ken particularly initiated and headed up several wildly successful efforts. Thanks also to Eva Thompson and Isabel Denham for their repeated help with Saturday projects.

The following projects were accomplished:

  • In the parsonage, we replaced a faucet and leaky pipes, repaired the dryer and windows, replaced a countertop.

  • We replaced lightbulbs in the Sanctuary—no small feat! This involves several people with ropes, pulleys, ladders, and so on.

  • We found and coordinated folks to shovel the walks. It was an easy winter.  The contract with the snowplow was renewed.

  • Ken and company painted the floors in both the Sanctuary and Vestry.

  • Ken and company also installed wainscoting in the Vestry.

  • The steeple was evaluated and options for the future were investigated by a special task group.

  • A dead tree was removed from the parking lot.

  • The Village Nursery School was welcomed as a future tenant of our space.

  • The Green Spirit Committee and B&G did a clean up day on April 22nd.

  • Several "First Saturday TLC" clean ups were done, including the carpet in the office and the woodwork in the Sanctuary.

  • The Evening Alliance replaced the kitchen floor.

  • A shed was built and installed on the parking lot for storage of outdoor equipment.

  • The old fence was removed and an attractive stockade fence installed.

The church should be aware of these ongoing needs:

  • The elevator should be regularly serviced, inspected and licensed.

  • The Vestry should have acoustic tile installed on the ceiling.

  • The Library has requested better tables.

  • The Parsonage needs a new hot water heater, as well as improved insulation and weatherproofing in the basement.

  • The church should have an energy audit, including furnaces.

  • The Front Entry (interior) should be painted, walls and ceiling, and have additional lights installed.

  • The lower side entry should be painted.

  • The steeple is covered by a report from the Steeple committee.

  • The new fence allows for snow to be pushed through a gate.  The contractor should be made aware of the new arrangement.

  • Long range: with the Village Nursery School very likely to move to our facilities in September '07, we should build a better retaining wall and green space behind the church.

  • Very long range: with the easement from the Gensheimers behind the church, we can entertain the thought of additional parking as well as a Memorial Garden or nature walk.

I am delighted to say that Peter Titcomb has agreed to be the new Chair of the B&G Committee. I have agreed to continue in a supportive or rotating position on the Committee. We intend to convene a meeting of the various interested semi-committee members in the fall in order to review the priorities and assign projects.

Respectfully submitted,
Sarah Marshall
