Steeple Sidewalk Sale

Saturday, June 19th
8:00 am - noon

GOOD NEWS! On Saturday June 19 you can unburden yourself of all that stuff you have put aside for the garage sale you'll never get around to! The Third Annual Sidewalk Sale to support the Ken Nye Steeple Maintenance Fund will take place at the church from 8:00 am to noon on that day. It works on a sell-it-yourself basis: you sign up for a table; bring your stuff to the church parking lot around 7:30 that morning; price, display and sell it; turn the proceeds over to the Steeple Fund; and take away anything you didn't sell.

We have raised over $1,000 at each of the last two sales to go toward periodic inspection and repainting of our beautifully restored steeple, and it has been great fun. Even if you have nothing to sell, round up a bunch of friends and come to hunt for bargains--or just bring your coffee and a lawnchair and enjoy some community time! If you would like to reserve a table (or share one), please email Jane Makela at janemakela@earthlink.net or call her at 781-4892.

News for Newcomers!

The Welcoming Committee invites you to the spring Newcomer Gathering!

These gatherings are an informal and friendly way to not only meet one another but to learn more about our church, it’s UU history and the many opportunities to participate in the life of our church.

This spring’s Newcomer Gathering will happen right after church on May 16th, will last about an hour an a half and there will be lunch. Child care will also be available.

Come to the Common Room, off the big room downstairs where coffee hour will be happening, go down the hall toward the office. Look for signs that will guide you.

We will meet you there with homemade, hot soup, bread and fruit.

There will be time to visit with one another and Rev. Jennifer and an opportunity to learn more about our church life.

Signing up on the bulletin board downstairs will help us know how many of you to expect and will make it possible for us to contact you if there are last minute changes. You may also leave a message with Cheryl in the church office or call or email any one of us on the Welcoming Committee to register or with your questions.

We hope you are beginning to feel at home here and that First Universalist may be a “good fit” for you. We hope too that you have been welcomed warmly and have already met open, interesting and friendly people…and most of all, that you will return and share your ideas and talents with us!

We look forward to spending this time with you!

Community Treasure Hunt
First Universalist Church (starting and ending location)
$50 fee per vehicle

As we get ready to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our church, this is the perfect opportunity to see things in Yarmouth that you've never seen - nor paid much attention to - before! Grab your friends and sign-up as a team (one vehicle per team, although you can have as many teammates as will safely fit in your car) to solve the clues and win the treasure. Clues will be scattered throughout Yarmouth and some activity will take place over water and/or underground, so be sure to wear old clothes, old shoes and have a flashlight for each member of your team.

Other considerations include:

· the winning team will collect all clues in the shortest amount of time;

· this is a great activity to follow a dinner party - although for safety reasons, no alcohol should be consumed prior to this event;

· register your team on the sheet posted on the bulletin board in the gathering room no later than Sunday, May 16th; and

· payment is due at the time of registration (checks can be made payable to First Universalist Church).

June 11th
Dancing with the Abolitionists, lecture by Alan Hall

When the Universalists first arrived in Yarmouth in the 1830's, they caused a great affront to the moral authority of the town's First Parish elite by trying to open a dancing school. Local historian Alan Hall will explore the ironic fact that the current Unitarian Universalist church was built by the very same Congregationalists who had excommunicated them a quarter century before.

June 13th
150th Celebration of the Church

Reverend Jennifer will deliver a service celebrating our past and looking to our future, followed by an ice cream social.

Please join our Sr. Youth, the Partner Church folks from Faith In Action, DRE Jenn McAdoo, and Rev. Jennifer for a fun and fascinating night exploring our partnership with Gyepes, Romania. IT’S A POTLUCK and, to honor our partners, we’re all cooking “Gyepes dishes”. Besides a scrumptious dinner, the evening offers:

  • An in-depth discussion of the political and religious reality of Romania
  • A full slideshow of both our July and January visits to Gyepes

A Lasting Peace

Celebrate the lessons and legacy of the great president, Abraham Lincoln as we mark the 150th year of our church.

This choral suite-composed by Audrey Snyder and John Jacobson, and presented by combined choirs from Yarmouth churches-uses Lincoln's own words to create a timeless tribute to the vision of a lasting peace in our time.

COME SING WITH US: We invited you to learn the piece with us, from now until the concert, at 6 pm on Thursday evenings at First Universalist. All are welcome.

PLEASE TELL OTHERS: We encourage anyone interested in American history, or music, or peace to spread the word. This is a very special one-time event.

THE CONCERT: Please come on February 7th at 4 pm to hear this stirring composition here in our sanctuary. $10/donation.
