Parents' Role in RE

Did you know that as a parent you are your child's primary religious educator? The RE Program is here to help you and the many families of our church community in this venture. Together, we can nurture our children and youth and support them on their spiritual journeys. While we share inthis important responsibility, there are specific things you can do to help, such as:

  • Come to church regularly. Doing so sends the message to your child that you value being part of a church community and helps your child develop a sense of belonging that will enhance her/his RE experience.

  • Volunteer as a teacher, youth group leader or assistant. Our program depends on many volunteers to make it work, so we ask each family with a child registered in RE to assist with the program during the year. (Those without children in RE are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer as well!) Check with the DRE to find out how you can help.

  • Learn about your child's RE experience. Introduce yourself to your child's leaders, serve as an assistant in your child's class, or help with a special project - all are great ways to learn about the many wonderful things happening in RE!

  • Stay informed. There is always a lot going on in RE. For periodic updates, read the RE column in our monthly church newsletter, Channels, or check out the RE bulletin board in the vestry. Weekly news can be found in the announcements section of the Sunday Order of Service or by subscribing to the church's weekly email, BUUGLE (to subscribe, simply send an email to uubuugle@maine.rr.com).

  • Keep us informed. Speak to the DRE or your child's teacher(s) aobut any issues in your child's or family's life that will help us better relate to her/him.

  • Take advantage of adult RE offerings. Throughout the year, the Adult Education and Exploration Committe sponsors seminars, classes and a variety of opportunities for adults who are interested in learning together and wanting to more fully engage their spiritual lives.

  • Be active in the life of this church. No doubt you have noticed that this is a vibrant congregation and there is a lot that goes on between our Sunday services. There are many ways to deepen your connection with the church and build a stronger sense of community. Whether you serve on a committee, sing in the choir, participate in an affinity group, or work at one of our fundraisers, the choice is yours.
